Individual will provide basic life support care under the direction of the Shiawassee and Genesee County Medical Control Authorities. The individual will ensure proper BLS treatment is provided, maintain patient confidentiality while following all appropriate policies and procedures as dictated by the appropriate medical control authorities and DVA Ambulance, Inc.
To perform successfully in this position an individual must be able to perform all required duties satisfactory manner with due regard to patient care and safety. The physical ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be make to enable patient care and safety be compromised.

General Information:
The supervisor makes assignments in terms of shifts to be worked and the general scope of the work assignment. The applicant performs the work in accordance with the procedures, policies, and medical orders provided. The applicant must exercise judgment in applying the proper guideline to the proper situation. The work is spot checked and evaluated on the basis of feedback from the patient, medical staff, and others.
Education and Experience:
- EMS Experience preferred
- Valid Michigan EMT-Basic License
- CPR Certification
- Must maintain all certifications and licenses as applicable to this position.
- Computer skills required. Should be able to type at least 25 WPM.
Minimum Qualifications:
Combination of education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates competence in each of the following:
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application.
- Good knowledge of the street systems, addresses and physical layout of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties and of the rescue equipment and the emergency medical equipment used in an Advanced Life Support agency.
- Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider CPR training course meeting or exceeding the American Heart Association’s standards.
- Incumbents must have successfully completed an emergency medical technician training course meeting or exceeding the DOT standards (110 hours minimum didactic) and it is preferred that the incumbent have at least one year experience in the field of pre-hospital emergency medical care. Additionally, incumbents must maintain a high degree of academic and practical knowledge in emergency medicine, and must attend sufficient continuing education classes, courses, and seminars both on and off duty to maintain annual emergency medical technician certification, as required by the State of Michigan.
- Preference will be given to applicants who have one-year experience as a EMT-Basic.
Ability to:
- Perform technical medical skills with a high degree of accuracy;
- Understand and effectively deal with emotional and medical needs of victims of injuries, acute illnesses, or psychological emergencies;
- Maintain a professional and objective approach to the care of ill or injured persons; learn new concepts in rescue and medical skills and techniques and in pre-hospital care;
- Perform a variety of limited mechanical work involved in the use, testing and maintenance of rescue and medical equipment;
- Direct the work of and teach other personnel;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions and orders; maintain a professional attitude when representing the Department;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, assisting agencies, hospital personnel and the general public;
- Drive and operate emergency ambulance units;
- Author reports with narrative and numeric information.
- Perform technical telecommunications skills with a high degree of accuracy;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions and orders;
- Maintain a professional attitude when representing the agency;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, assisting agencies, hospital personnel and the general public;
- Exercise independent judgment and work with a minimum of supervision;
- React quickly, calmly and efficiently in emergency situations
- Maintain accurate records;
- Learn and apply established rules, procedures, and policies;
- Learn the use, proper care and operation radio, telephone, and computer equipment;
- Spell correctly and use good English grammar; and
- Speak in a clear, understandable voice
Other Requirements:
- The work also requires the applicant to multi-task and performs several job functions at once successfully, and further requires extensive memory retention and the ability to function in a fast pace noisy work environment.
- May be required to work Nights, Weekends and Holidays.
- The work requires the incumbent to operate emergency medical vehicles, move medical equipment, and extract injured persons from a wide variety of situations. Situations can involve vehicular, industrial, agricultural, and residential accidents, injuries or illness and occur anywhere in Shiawassee or Genesee Counties. At times the work requires movement over various types of terrain, (hilly, steep, rocky, rough, and/or wet/slippery surfaces). The incumbent at all times must be able to carry or help carry someone from the site of the injury to the mode of transportation (vehicle/ helicopter) and ride with the injured party, the incumbent must see, hear and communicate with the injured party. The work is shift work with mostly 12-hour shifts involved.
- EMT-Basics generally work 12 to 72 hours per week, as assigned. EMT-Basics will be issued and must wear Department issued uniforms while on duty. Additionally EMT-Basics will be responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of both dress and safety uniforms, and assigned equipment.
