Individual will provide Dispatch Life Support care as prescribed by the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch. The individual will ensure proper resources are dispatched to the locations of emergency situations. Maintain patient confidentiality while following all appropriate policies and procedures as dictated by the appropriate medical control authorities and DVA Ambulance, Inc.

General Information:
The supervisor makes assignments in terms of shifts to be worked and the general scope of the work assignment. The applicant performs the work in accordance with the procedures, policies, and medical orders provided. The applicant must exercise judgment in applying the proper guideline to the proper situation. The work is spot checked and evaluated on the basis of feedback from the patient, medical staff, and others.
Education and Experience:
- EMS Experience preferred, however not required
- CPR Certification (Provided upon Hire)
- EMD Certification (Provided upon Hire)
- Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification (Provided upon Hire)
- Must maintain all certifications and licenses as applicable to this position.
- Computer skills required. Should be able to type at least 25 WPM.
Minimum Qualifications:
Combination of education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates competence in each of the following:
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application.
- Good knowledge of the street systems, addresses and physical layout of Genesee County and the surround area and of the telephone, computer, and radio equipment used in an Dispatch Life Support agency.
- Upon hire, must successfully complete an emergency medical dispatch training course meeting or exceeding the NAED standards (24 hours minimum didactic). Additionally, applicants must maintain a high degree of academic and practical knowledge in emergency dispatching.
- Upon hire, must successfully complete a Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider CPR training course meeting or exceeding the American Heart Association’s standards (8 hours minimum didactic).
- Upon hire, must successfully complete a Public Safety Telecommunicator course meeting or exceeding APCO International's Project 33 standards
- Upon hire, must attend sufficient continuing education classes, courses, and seminars both on and off duty to maintain annual emergency medical dispatch and CPR certification, as required by the department and the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch.
- Preference will be given to applicants who have one-year experience as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher.
Ability to:
- Perform technical telecommunications skills with a high degree of accuracy;
- Understand and effectively deal with emotional and medical needs of victims of injuries, acute illnesses, or psychological emergencies;
- Maintain a professional and objective approach to the pre-arrival care of ill or injured persons;
- Learn new concepts in medical dispatching and techniques and in emergency medical dispatch care;
- Direct the work of and teach other personnel;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions and orders;
- Maintain a professional attitude when representing the Department;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, assisting agencies, hospital personnel and the general public;
- Direct and allocate emergency ambulance units;
- Author reports with narrative and numeric information.
- Exercise independent judgment and work with a minimum of supervision
- React quickly, calmly and efficiently in emergency situations
- Maintain accurate records
- Learn and apply established rules, procedures, and policies
- Learn the use, proper care and operation radio, telephone, and computer equipment
- Evaluate situations, organize thoughts, respond quickly and accurately and relay pertinent information clearly and completely, whether written, verbal or via Computer Aide Dispatch (CAD)
- Spell correctly and use good English grammar
- Speak in a clear, understandable voice
Other Requirements:
- The work requires the applicant to operate telephone, computer, and radio communications devices, perform repetitive hand movements, clear speech techniques, and comprehension skills of audio transmissions. At times the work requires long periods of sitting and limited physical movement. The applicant at all times must be able to hear and communicate with callers, field responders, colleagues, hospital staff, other public safety personnel, the general public, etc. The work shift is mostly 12-hour shifts and requires the applicant to be awake and alert.
- The work also requires the applicant to multi-task and performs several job functions at once successfully, and further requires extensive memory retention and the ability to function in a fast pace noisy work environment.
- EMD’s generally work 12 to 48 hours per week, as assigned. EMD’s will be issued and must wear Department issued uniforms while on duty. Additionally EMD’s will be responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of both dress and safety uniforms, and assigned equipment.
- Communications Staff may be required to work Nights, Weekends and Holidays. The Communications Dept must be staff 24 hours, 365 days a year.
